Tunesday - Mark Johns

Happy Tunesday!

I wanted to share some background on a singer/songwriter/producer who goes by the name of Mark Johns. No, it’s not a dude. Mark Johns is Naomie, a 22-year old Canadian-born gal of Moroccan descent from Singapore. She’s only been writing songs for about two years, but was able to jump start her career after meeting Philippines-based produced, Manila Killa. He introduced her to Moving Castle, “an internet collective of talents producers from all over the world,” which helped spread her music to a larger audience.

While she had a solid foundation, her career changed after she recorded a cover of Kanye’s “Ni**as in Paris” (listen here). It caught quite a bit of attention, but blew up after Skrillex shared it via Twitter. Skrill was such a big fan that the two eventually connected online and later met in-person to discuss her future and music career. Not long after, Skrillex invited her to join his record label, OWSLA.

Mark Johns just released her first EP – Molino – under the label about a month ago. Don’t ask me what kind of music it is because: 1.) I don’t have an answer 2.) Her FB page labels her genre as ‘watermelon.’ She’s got a voice that’s easy on the ears though, and her production is on point.

Keep jammin’

P.S.

Manilla Killa is part of the DJ duo called Hotel Garuda.
