Stephen Colbert, Skrillex and Sonny Moore
Before I get into this week’s email, I want to share one last little bit on Chance the Rapper and then I’ll stop. I swear…maybe. Last night, he performed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert along with Skrillex and a group by the name of Hundred Waters – a group led by vocalist Nicole Miglis that fuses electronic music with piano, bass, drum the flute and trumpet. You can watch the performance, along with a fun clip of Skrillex and Chance remixing Stephen Colbert’s monologue on Hot New Hip Hop. If you want to listen to studio version or watch the music video for the song, you can do so here.
When/if you watch the live performance, you might be thinking to yourself, “But where’s Skrillex? What does he even do in the song?” Well you see the dude with the long black hair and hat playing guitar? That’d be him. Not only that, but Hundred Waters is also a part of his record label, OWSLA.
If weren’t already aware, the massively popular producer started out as the lead vocalist for an emo/hardcore/punk/whatever-you-want-to-call-it band called From First to Last. Sonny Moore eventually decided to leave the band and turn to producing electronic music after all the touring and screaming took a major toll on his vocal chords. You can check out a few songs highlighting his musical career’s evolution below:
From First to Last: “Note to Self”
Sonny Moore (pre-Skrillex): “Mora”
Skrillex: “Bangarang”
Going from a rock vocalist to EDM producer, this dude knows no genres and has worked with famous artists ranging from Justin Bieber to A$SAP Rocky to The Doors to Ellie Goulding (who he used to date) to a Korean pop group. You gotta’ admire the dude for recognizing talent and his passion for performing. In 2011, he played a total of 322 shows!
And with that I’m going to wrap it up and share the latest Sawce Selects with some songs I’ve been listening to for the past week:
